Edward Willis papers, 1857-1914.

Papers consist of correspondence, quartermaster records, and other items. Correspondence (1857-1880) includes letters (1866) from Varina Davis (Mrs. Jefferson Davis) mainly concerning financial and personal matters and her husband's health and imprisonment; letters (1878, 1880) from P.G.T. Beauregard concerning books and pamphlets about the Civil War and Beauregard's papers stolen after the war; a letter (n.d.) from his grandmother Mary H.G. Willis concerning family matters; and letters (January 1861) from uncle Pyatt A. Willis concerning Edward Willis' military service, fortifications around Charleston, a patriotic poem, and other matters. Quartermaster records include tissue copies of letters and invoices (1899) from U.S. depot quartermaster Willis at Charleston to various individuals regarding orders and shipments of supplies; and a C.S.A. quartermaster account book (1862-1863) containing accounts for bounty money, purchases and expenditures by military units and soldiers, company payrolls (including payrolls for several South Carolina regiments), and other expenses, with a list of discharged soldiers. Other items include a petition (1879) to the mayor and aldermen of Charleston asking for the removal of the stone steps and platforms of the post office (which obstruct the sidewalk); newspaper clippings, including Willis' obituaries; a pardon (1865) granted to Willis by President Andrew Johnson; certificates of membership (1857-1858) in the Independent Order of Oddfellows; biographical material on Willis; and a "List of Books presented to the Library of the Charleston Museum by Mrs. Edward Willis" (n.d.).
